Katherine the Great
I like to think of myself as a storyteller. Mostly I tell stories about knitting.

I didn’t have high expectations for this film, and it flew right by them. With a really strong soundtrack (John Waite, Guns N’ Roses, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, the Scorpions, Roy Orbison) and a lovable cast, this movie is destined to be a cult classic. It explores what makes us human while still being light-hearted and funny. I thought Nicholas Hoult did a great job of running like a zombie as R (for Romeo?). Also, he has gorgeous eyes. He’s officially the best-looking zombie…..um, ever? Dave Franco was just enough of a jackass that on the off chance his brain does get eaten, no one will really mind. Rob Corddry was so cute, I wanted to put him in my pocket and Teresa Palmer as Julie was a much more likable damsel in distress than oh, say, Kristen Stewart. I think it was the gun; she didn’t seem all that distressed.

In knitting news, there is a cable sweater prominently worn by Teresa Palmer. I like the 3/4 length sleeves and the cable pattern, but I wasn’t crazy about the neckline or the color.

Nevertheless, I was impressed with how it held its shape while sopping wet and did I mention I like the cable pattern?

How the evening went:
8:40pm The Husband and I arrive at the theater for the 10 o’clock showing. We are evidently the only people this excited to see H & G.
9:00 I’m knitting a dark blue sock and ask The Husband, “Why is it so dark in here?”
The Husband: “Because it’s a movie theater, not a knitting studio.”
me: “So, I’m confused, this is NOT a knitting studio?”
9:20 Other people enter the theater. A teenaged boy sits two seats away and proceeds to talk passionately to his friend for a solid 30 minutes about comic books. Same teenaged boy then says, “I mean, I’m not THAT into comic books.” I couldn’t help thinking to myself that clearly he was THAT into comic books and being a little sad that he couldn’t be himself. and then I thought that it would have been like me saying, “I’m not THAT into knitting.” Being an adult and comfortable in your own skin is vastly underrated.

10:00 The movie
– This movie was pretty bloody. When I started thinking about how I prefer the way Quentin Tarantino does blood, I knew they’d gone over the top.

– The script was better than expected. Possibly because the movie was only 90 minutes long.

– My favorite character was the troll. Played by Derek Mears and voiced by Robin Atkin Downes, he’s charming. And the best part is, his name’s Edward. A troll. named Edward. love it!

– Overall, it was what I expected and I enjoyed it for what it was. A cheesy bloody action film based on a fairy tale. I don’t always have highbrow taste in movies, but I’d watch a sequel and I’m willing to admit it.

Comments Off on Knitting Movie Review – This is 40 (spoiler alert)
Category: movie reviews

I talked The Husband into taking me to see This is 40 at the new Moviehouse in town. I loved the big seats (room for my knitting bag in the recliner with me) and that they kept the lights on low during the previews so I could knit through them with ease. But, I’d stay away from the pizza with basil; it was STRONG!

I thought this film was going to be a cute quirky comedy about how life with kids is stressful, but how they are so amusing and wonderful that it is totally worth it….or maybe it would be about how the dad had a little bit of a midlife crisis, but with laughs, the family would all get through it together. Wrong. This is a film with several funny scenes (kudos to Jason Segel and Melissa McCarthy), but overall, the movie made me kind of sad for the parents who had made some poor financial choices and were totally broke. Not really the laughs I was hoping for OR the happy ending that I require. I think that the actors carried their weight, but I was disappointed.

Ps. I do not believe there were any notable knits in this movie.
