![Earlier this week, @marz1pan agreed to eat lunch at our local Irish pub to celebrate me finally finishing my draft of my Irish paranormal romance.
The proprietor, who sees me regularly, asked if I was knitting for a new addition. I said “No, these socks are for me!?!” and I held it up for him to see.
He smiled and walked away.
After he left, I asked Megan “Did he just ask if I was pregnant?”
She said “Yes. You didn’t misunderstand.”
And then I sat for a second. Someone asked if I was pregnant the week before Mother’s Day and I didn’t feel overrun by grief.
My gaping wound is healing and becoming a scar I can touch without it gutting me.
Two things have contributed to this:
- therapy
- doing the work of writing a heroine who finds joy after life lifes all over her.
While I hunt for and find joy on a regular basis, the act of working through this fictional plot has been healing. I’m so grateful for my writing journey.

Perhaps this month, my knitting and crocheting purpose is to serve as a warning to others.
I started on a speed blanket (my 4th, mind you) and happily measured that it would be 29 inches wide. I worked on it a little bit and was happy with the yarn. Then, I flattened it out for a group of crocheters and onlookers and said, “that looks too skinny to me, does that look too skinny to you?” and they all agreed that it should be wider. I measure it and sure enough….it is about 23 inches wide, which is MUCH too narrow.
So, I will rip it out and start again and this time, I think I will start with 35 inches wide in case standard deviation strikes again.
